Do you have an upcoming dental examination? When you visit your Baltimore dentist at The Smile Design Center, you can expect the following components of a professional teeth cleaning and oral health examination.
- Medical History
At the beginning of your appointment at The Smile Design Center, you’ll be asked to complete a medical history form. If you are currently taking any medications, write them down and bring them to your appointment. If you’ve been having any difficulties with chewing or tooth sensitivity, this is your opportunity to ask your dentist about it. Your dentist and oral hygienist will both go over your medical history with you. Even after your initial dentist appointment, it’s important to keep your medical history up to date.
- Teeth Cleaning
While you wait for your dentist, your hygienist will thoroughly clean your teeth. Expect a full teeth cleaning complete with brushing and flossing. This teeth cleaning removes any plaque or tartar deeply rooted beneath your gums or between your teeth. Cleaning your teeth before your dentist’s examination will allow for a more accurate picture of your oral health.
- Dental X-Rays
If your dentist suspects that there may be a problem beneath the surface of your teeth, he may recommend that you receive dental X-rays. Taking new oral X-rays of your teeth is recommended periodically as it gives your dentist a better picture of your oral hygiene. You may receive a bitewing X-ray that analyzes the crowns of your teeth. A panoramic X-ray is also frequently used to give your dentist a general view of your mouth.
- Oral Cancer Evaluation
During your dental exam, Dr. Kellner will examine your mouth for signs of oral cancer. Identifying oral cancer early will allow you to seek treatment from a medical specialist.
