How to Relax Before Your Dental Appointment

    Last updated 3 years ago

Dental anxiety and dental phobia are common among people of all ages. If you feel extremely anxious before or during appointments with your dentist or even avoid going to the dentist altogether, you may be suffering from one of these conditions. Luckily, there are steps that you and your dentist can take to help you feel at ease and get the dental treatment you need in comfort. First, let your dentist know how you feel. He may be able to offer suggestions or recommend sedation dentistry to help you relax. You should also ask your dentist to explain each step of your treatment beforehand so that you know what to expect. Don’t try to squeeze your appointment into a busy day, which may make you even more stressed. Take a few minutes to breathe deeply and relax before you head to the dentist’s office.

At The Smile Design Center of Baltimore, we offer sedation dentistry to help our patients feel comfortable during dental cleanings and treatments. Our team also provides general and cosmetic dentistry services. Give us a call at (443) 275-9821 for more information.

Tips for Preventing Red Wine Stains on Your Teeth

    Last updated 3 years ago

Having a glass of red wine is a great way to unwind after a long day or enjoy time with a friend. However, red wine can discolor your teeth, leading to a smile that is less bright than it could be. While your cosmetic dentist can help you whiten your teeth, it is a good idea to prevent staining in the first place. Whether you drink red wine each week or only on special occasions, you can use the tips below to keep this beverage from staining your beautiful smile.

    Swish Between Glasses
You may be opposed to alternating between red and white glasses of wine, but swirling a bit of white wine over your teeth between each glass of red wine can help to prevent stained teeth. Seltzer water is also effective at washing away red wine before it stains.

Clean Your Teeth Before and After
Brushing your teeth before you begin your meal can help to prevent stains from red wine. This is because red wine can stain any plaque that has accumulated on and between your teeth. You should not brush your teeth soon after drinking red wine—this can actually damage your enamel. Instead, wipe your teeth off with a tissue or a wipe made specifically for that purpose when you are done with your red wine to keep stains off.

    Prep Your Lips
Lip gloss is often a petroleum-based product, so applying it to your lips before each glass of red wine can help to keep your teeth pearly white. Each time you take a sip of your wine, the petroleum in your lip gloss will shield your teeth from the staining effects of the wine.

    Have a Snack
Snacking a bit while you enjoy your red wine can actually be beneficial for your teeth. Hard cheeses, in particular, can be very helpful because they will add a layer of calcium to your teeth that will block the staining elements of the wine. Certain crunchy vegetables, including celery and broccoli, are also good snack options because they help to scrub away wine deposits and increase your saliva production, which will help to rinse the wine off of your teeth.

If your smile is dull or discolored from red wine, coffee, tea, or another beverage, professional teeth whitening can help. At The Smile Design Center of Baltimore, we offer in-office whitening services to help you get the bright, white smile you dream of. To learn more, call us at (443) 275-9821.
