Understanding How Fluoride Treatment Helps Strengthen Your Teeth

Last updated 4 years ago

For the health of your teeth and gums, brushing and flossing on a daily basis are the most important steps you can take. However, using additional measures such as fluoride treatments can further protect your teeth from tooth decay. If you have a history of cavities, or if your dentist deems you at risk for tooth decay, you may want to increase your fluoride usage. The following information highlights why fluoride has been an effective tool for oral health for so many years.

Enamel Repair
Do you brush your teeth every time you have a snack or consume a beverage? If not, your teeth likely suffer from minor damage with each treat or drink. If the foods you eat and beverages you drink contain sugar, the bacteria in your mouth can feed upon those sugars and begin attacking your tooth enamel in just minutes. Though you may not develop cavities, you may sustain minor deterioration of your tooth enamel. Undergoing fluoride treatment can reverse the effects of bacterial damage. When applied to the teeth, fluoride can restore sections of harmed enamel to its former strength. This remineralization of the enamel can lessen the occurrence of cavities in the future.

Enamel Fortification
Dentists strongly urge patients to undergo fluoride treatment to prevent tooth decay before it starts. Over time, fluoride treatment can result in stronger teeth, fewer cavities, and lower dental costs. Several decades of studies have proven the effectiveness of fluoride as a preventative oral health treatment, both when used topically and ingested. The World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention consider properly fluoridated water an invaluable benefit for communities. If your tap water is not fluoridated, or if you drink primarily bottled water, your dentist may recommend fluoride treatments to strengthen your tooth enamel.
