Dental Sedation: Nitrous Oxide

Last updated 4 years ago

Nitrous oxide is a gas that can be used to reduce dental anxiety. If you feel nervous about receiving dental care, your dentist may suggest nitrous oxide to help you feel more comfortable during treatment. When you receive nitrous oxide, a small mask is placed over your nose and you will breathe in a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen. The gas is fast-acting and after three to five minutes, you will feel relaxed. Nitrous oxide is a mild sedative, meaning you will be awake and able to breathe on your own—you will simply feel more at ease during treatment. Once treatment is complete, the mask is removed and the effects wear off quickly. You can safely drive yourself home from the dentist’s office and there are no harmful side effects of using this form of sedation.

At The Smile Design Center, we are focused on providing personalized and comfortable care to each of our patients. You can learn more about receiving dental work with nitrous oxide or other forms of sedation by calling (443) 275-9821.
