Over time and with daily use, teeth can become stained by dark foods and beverages, tobacco, age, and even certain medications. Along with causing the teeth to lose their whiteness, stains and yellowing can make people feel insecure about their smiles. Happily, there are many teeth whitening options available at a cosmetic dentist’s office today, including the Zoom! procedure. Zoom! is a safe, fast, and effective way for making the teeth white again. This is how Zoom! works to restore teeth:
Getting the Teeth Ready
This procedure whitens the teeth using hydrogen peroxide, which should not be applied to the cheeks, tongue, and lips. Before starting the treatment, the dentist covers the lips with a retractor device and puts gauze along the inside of the mouth. This protects the sensitive areas of the mouth and ensures that the procedure progresses effectively.
Administering the Gel
The Zoom! whitening treatment uses a specially formulated gel that can make the teeth up to eight shades lighter in a matter of minutes. The dentist spreads this gel evenly to ensure that all of the teeth whiten properly.
Using the Activator Light
After the gel is administered, a light is placed directly over the mouth to activate the gel. The special Zoom! light uses a low temperature to help the gel work faster and break down stains in the teeth. This process lasts for 15 minutes and is repeated two additional times, or more, in order to achieve the best results. After this stage is completed, the teeth appear significantly whiter. The dentist will show before-and-after pictures of the teeth in order to demonstrate the difference.
Once the gel is removed, the dentist will administer a fluoride treatment. This process only takes a few minutes and will help the teeth stay white longer. From start to finish, the Zoom! procedure only takes about an hour, and you’ll walk out of the dentist’s office with a smile on your face.
